Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Family:

You should get married and have children. You will never make it to college so the best you can hope for is being a housewife and maybe work a low paying blue collar job. I would be lucky to get to waitress, clean, or maybe do retail or basic clerical. I have done all of those by the way on my way to where I am now.

  • How I responded:

Never close doors, and grab any new experience you can. Even when you are scared to death and can hardly function, go for it. You will surprise yourself with what you can do, and next thing you know those scary things will be old hat. Do not let the world box you into a particular spot. I never dreamed I would be doing the things I do working in a man's world and making as much money as I do. I make more than most women I know in any field and I make more than a lot of men, and I have a blast.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I grew up very poor and had parents who lacked confidence to try to climb the ladder. I had confidence and kept wanting more. I never settled.

  • I am a woman and was taught there were only certain jobs women could do. I never accepted that and always wanted to do what the guys were doing. I don't expect special treatment and my co workers probably don't even think of me as a woman. Work hard!
