Life & Career Milestones

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

I made education a priority because my mother was a foster youth and my father couldn't read.

  • 2.

I set out to be a teacher.

  • 3.

I taught High School English for 8 years.

  • 4.

Then I decided that I wanted to make different kinds of changes and became an administrator.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Teachers:

    You are an underachiever.

  • How I responded:

I knew what I was made of and I knew that I was here to help others. When I got my teaching credential my first job was at my own high school as an English teacher. I went back to my old English teacher and I reminded her of what she had said to me. She was very embarrassed and apologized. Little things stick.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I applied for grants and financial aid in college.

  • I followed my friends into college. They kept me on track. They would call to make sure that I was registering for the right classes and keep me up on deadlines. I had no other role models. My peers and I watched over each other.
