Life & Career Milestones

My path in life took a while to figure out

  • 1.

Very early in life, I realized I didn't know what I wanted to do for a living.

  • 2.

I went to college, then after that, I went to Cosmetology school and was still career challenged.

  • 3.

I held several jobs in the beauty industry moving back and forth across the country. I was unhappy.

  • 4.

Until I landed in Chicago. It was there that I took control of my future and quit a job I hated.

  • 5.

Got down to my last $300 and landed a job in an HR department for a retail company. I finally knew.

  • 6.

Years later I relocated to CA working at Carl's Jr and Blockbuster (may they rest in peace) HR.

  • 7.

Then I got a call from a Taco Bell recruiter. I told her I would never work in fast food again. Ever!

  • 8.

11 years later, I'm still here and I love to Live Mas!

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Myself:

I don't know anything about HR so why would anyone hire me to do that type of work? I'm scared to death to fail so I don't know if I want to do this.

  • How I responded:

Even though I didn't have any confidence in my abilities at the time, I tried anyway. I applied for a job I had no experience for and somehow convinced them to hire me. I needed to show them that my past work and life experience could add value to their organization. I stopped listening to my inner critic and began believing that I could learn HR and be really good at it. Once I got the job, I worked all day then went home and read HR books and case studies all night long! Never give up.
