How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
What will you do with an English degree? You shouldn't study literature if you don't want to be a teacher. These skills won't help you find a job.
How I responded:
I talked to people in the workforce who had a similar educational background to me, and then used their successes to motivate me and help me stay hopeful.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I was able to get scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate school to help me better afford tuition. I also worked part-time jobs throughout high school, college, and graduate school.
I joined the LGBT organization at my school and used meetup groups to find social events and get to know people who shared some of my experiences.
