My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
Freshman year of college - PreMed major. I wanted to attend Medical School.
2.
Sophomore year - Discovering a career in medicine was not for me. Changed major to environmental sciences. Maybe I'll work with animals?
3.
Senior year - Found my passion, law enforcement. Changed major to Criminal Justice. Took max credits my senior year to graduate on-time.
4.
Volunteered with local law enforcement agency - was unsure if a career as a police officer was what I really wanted.
5.
Graduated college - Began work in retail management, handled some loss prevention cases and learned I liked investigating.
6.
Attended career fair, hired by State Farm Insurance as a claim associate. Learned a LOT about investigating liability claims.
7.
Interviewed with and was hired by Travelers as a claim professional for general liability.
8.
Promoted in my role with Travelers, handling more complex liability cases and lawsuits. Finally found something that truly interested me.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Peers:
Insurance is boring. Why would you want to work in insurance? I heard this more than once. In fact, I heard this on several occasions. This is not related to your Bachelor's Degree why not do something else.
How I responded:
The criticism you will face, regardless of who it comes from, generally comes from a place of misunderstanding. Insurance is an excellent and very fruitful career path. I've thoroughly enjoyed working in my profession and I am always learning new things. Working as a claim professional has opened my eyes to the insurance industry and how truly interesting it really is.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
Seek out help wherever you can get it. I read a lot of online articles about how to navigate the application process. Remember that you are making a better life for yourself by attending college. You may hear it is not necessary but trust me, it is!
