Life & Career Milestones

I've taken a lot of twists and turns

  • 1.

I started college right after high school but changed my mind about becoming a lawyer after my first time at jury duty on a murder trial.

  • 2.

I took a few years off from college to figure out what I wanted to major in.

  • 3.

I started a nursing program when I returned to college. I wanted to work as a nurse with children. After my 2nd clinical rotation, I realized that this was not a good fit.

  • 4.

After taking a few more classes and exploring my options, and job shadowing a high school counselor for one of my class assignments, I finally found my perfect fit!

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Peers:

Don't major in psychology because there are not enough careers that pay well with only that degree.

  • How I responded:

If you are undecided about a major or career, explore different classes in your first two years of college. My favorite class was psychology and classes related to that, so I really started to take a look at what careers could develop from this degree. That being said, you need to find that balance of a degree that you're passionate about and finding a career that can support the lifestyle you would like to have.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I had just quit my full-time job with benefits to go back to college full-time and decided to file for divorce. Thankfully, my parents were very supportive and wanted me to finish college, so I moved back to their home with my two-year old son.
